SUMMARY:Tenerife, Spain – Sinfónica de Tenerife – Varèse, Beethoven, Bartók
DESCRIPTION:Vasily Petrenko, conductor\nXiaolu Zang, piano\nSinfónica de Tenerife\nPROGRAMME\nVarèse: Intégrales\nBeethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, ‘Emperor’, Op. 73\nBartók: Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116, BB 123\nVENUE NOTE\nAn orchestra that frees itself to explore and conquer new musical realms. In this return of conductor Vasily Petrenko, the Sinfónica de Tenerife revives the visionary spirits of Varèse and Bartók.\nThe evening begins with Edgard Varèse’s Intégrales, often considered radical for its explosion of textures, timbres and interludes that foreshadow much of the music of the 20th century. Music is born of pure, unadulterated strength.\nNext, the winner of the Maria Canals International Music Competition, pianist Xiaolu Zang, interprets Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 (known as the ‘Emperor Concerto’) with its evocation of freedom, power and lyricism.\nConcluding the programme is one of the crowning achievements of 20th-century symphonic music: Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra. Composed during his exile in America, the work transforms the orchestra into a flexible entity full of understated humour, rhythm, free architecture and popular memory. In addition to highlighting most of the instruments, Bartók reinvented symphonic architecture by creating a living mosaic of tension and interplay that paved the way for all subsequent orchestral music.\n
