Jean Sibelius: Violin Concerto in D minor op. 47
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor op. 68
VENUE PROGRAMME NOTE:
“The art is not only to approach this work from a human perspective […], but to bring in the aspect of nature,” says Julia Fischer about Jean Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. It is one of her favorite pieces, and has been on the program for many important debuts in her impressive career. The changing moods of nature determine the unique energy and the extraordinary timbres of the late-romantic concerto. A theme that could hardly be more relevant 100 years after it was written. Johannes Brahms’ monumental first symphony also has plenty of sound intensity – the work with which the Viennese-by-choice musician confidently stepped out of Beethoven’s shadow after fourteen years of musical struggle. A masterpiece – and a showpiece for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of its chief conductor.
