Vasily comments: “Performing alongside Anne-Sophie Mutter is always an event. She is one of the great violinists of her generation, and she has a particular connection to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. We are performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto alongside Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. What I find interesting about that pairing is that both composers, when they wrote these pieces, were writing with a real sense of consequence. Not just works, but statements. There is something exploratory in both of them that connects across the century between them. To bring those two pieces together in Italy, in Ravenna and Turin, with this orchestra and this soloist, is a genuinely exciting prospect.”
