Classic Intro 6.15pm- Stephen Johnson introduces us to the first two of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos, prior to Stephen Hough’s performances. Stephen broadcasts regularly for BBC Radio 3, 4 and the World Service, and presents Radio 3’s Discovering Music.
There’s only one Stephen Hough – the Heswall-born lad who’s been hailed as a “genius” in the USA and who is one of the most brilliant pianists in the world today. Here in Liverpool, we’re always delighted to welcome him home: and over five unmissable concerts he’ll be playing all five of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos. Today, he begins with the youthful energy of the First Concerto, and Vasily Petrenko surrounds it with wonders: a sparkling overture by Beethoven’s hero, Mozart, and Debussy’s gorgeous impressionist oil-painting of the sea in all its many moods, La Mer.
Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: “Overture to the Abduction from the Seraglio”
Ludwig van Beethoven: “Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15”
Claude Debussy: “Iberia”
Claude Debussy: “La Mer”
