Stephen Hough’s unparalleled skills on the piano have conquered old and new worlds alike. Joining the crème de la crème of global inteligentsia, Stephen was the only classical musician to be awarded the MacArthur Fellowship ‘Genius Grant’ award – and, boy, has he done it justice. Here in Liverpool, we’re always delighted to welcome him home, and over five unmissable concerts he’ll be playing all five of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos. Today, it’s the turn of the Second: 30 minutes of youthful energy and rapid-fire wit. Vasily Petrenko surrounds it with wonders: a sparkling overture by Beethoven’s hero, Mozart, and – 100 years to the day since the composer’s death – Debussy’s gorgeous La Mer.
Programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: “Overture to the Abduction from the Seraglio”
Ludwig van Beethoven: “Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Op. 15”
Claude Debussy: “Iberia”
Claude Debussy: “La Mer”
