Programme Note
“I remember exactly how the warm sound of the strings enveloped me for the first time, the horns seemed to carry me it was like in a dream, a magical feeling that I will never forget!”
Khatia Buniatishvili has only positive memories of her concert debut with a large symphony orchestra playing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1. Since then, the star pianist from Georgia has had a great deal of sympathy for this masterpiece, which has become one of the most popular concertos par excellence and has become emblematic of the Romantic piano concerto. With Vasily Petrenko as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s new Music Director, he embeds Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto in a program full of sumptuous romance and rousing rhythms from his old Russian and new British homeland.
