A jealous sultan, his beautiful, intelligent wife, and a thousand and one nights of fantasy. Sounds like a lot to put into music, but in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a violin becomes the storyteller as the orchestra paints a world of thieves and genies, shattering storms and birds the size of houses.
