PROGRAMME
Tchaikovsky: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D major, Op. 35
Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor

RPO NOTE
Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of those rare violinists for whom the term “living legend” is absolutely justified. Among the most celebrated and admired of our time, it was Herbert von Karajan who discovered her in 1976 when she was just 13 years old and invited her to perform with the Berlin Philharmonic. Accompanied by the acclaimed Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, which returns to the season under the baton of its music director Vasily Petrenko after a 15-year absence, Mutter debuts with the Concerto in D major, Op. 35, the only one written for the instrument by Tchaikovsky. The highly anticipated grand finale of the Lingotto Concertos culminates with Mahler’s Fifth Symphony , a turning point by the Austrian composer, which describes the inner drama of the self and the wild forces that flow through it.
